Why Choose Dumbells
Dumbells are undoubtedly one of the most effective ways to gain strength and build muscle. As with all free weights, as opposed to the use of weights machines, the incorporation of a wide range of muscles is needed to train and provide balance, meaning that a far more natural method of building muscle is achieved and in return the results outweigh that of any other method.
Dumbells are also a highly versatile piece of training equipment, allowing for an astonishingly large variety of exercises to be practiced, attacking a wide and varied range of muscle groups. As testament to the effectiveness of dumbells, one only has to look to the popularity which they experience. This can be clearly seen in nearly every gym across the world, with the dumbbell section permanently occupied.
So, which dumbells are the right ones for your needs? Well there are a couple of factors to take into consideration to determine your best options before you go ahead and make the decision to buy dumbells.
Cast Iron Dumbells
Always a great option, cast iron dumbells are highly durable, lasting for years without ever presenting any problems. Easy to change the weights and select the correct weight for any particular training session or individual exercise.
Should the weight set that comes with the cast iron dumbells be too light for your needs then it is very easy to buy more weights to add to them. Because of the cast iron design, the weights also take up a relatively small amount of space when compared to vinyl dumbells or any other design.
The only real problems come in the grip on the bars. These can often be quite abrasive and means that a good pair of weight lifting gloves is essential, unless of course you have hands like sandpaper to start with.
Vinyl Dumbells
Vinyl dumbells are generally of a fixed weight meaning that no there is no messing about changing weights and fiddling with the bars as there is with cast iron weights.
Vinyl dumbells also require no lifting gloves as they will not be so abrasive upon the hands and fingers. This generally does not compromise grip either, with the weights sticking to the hands.
Often vinyl dumbells come with carry cases which can make for easy transportation if needed, something which will be seldom found with cast iron weights.
However, the downside to vinyl weights is that in the majority of cases, as it is not possible to adjust the weight, you will need more than one set. Although in various plastic and vinyl outer cased dumbells this is not an issue.
Chrome Dumbells
As with vinyl, chrome dumbells are of fixed weight (although there are some adjustable chrome dumbells one the market), which has both advantages and disadvantages as discussed above. The main draw of chrome is that they provide a stylish look and look great in any gym, whether it be in your bedroom at home or the local fitness centre.
The type of grip can also vary when you buy chrome dumbells, ranging from a rubber grip to a more abrasive textured grip. So it is always a good idea to invest in some weight lifting gloves.
Due to the fixed weight of chrome dumbells some find problems in achieving a weight load heavy enough to effectively complete some exercises and so unless you are looking to do high volume repetitions then make sure to buy chrome dumbells which include a higher weight level.
Dumbells Set Due to the limitations of chrome and vinyl dumbells it is usually best practice to get a dumbell set that includes dumbells that cover a wide distribution of weight. This gives you the freedom to complete either low repetition, high intensity workouts, or high repetition low intensity sessions.
